BASEL, APRIL 1, 2025 – The Canton of Basel-City has approved an innovative and environmentally friendly solution for pool cleaning at the Sesselacker swimming pool. Starting April 15, special “Putzgarra” fish from South America will be introduced, which feed on algae, skin flakes, and other organic residues. These natural pool cleaners ensure crystal-clear water and reduce the use of chemicals by up to 40%. “With this measure, we are not only strengthening sustainability but also enhancing the bathing experience,” explains the cantonal pool administration. Swimmers are asked not to feed or disturb the fish. Special guided tours will allow interested parties to learn more about the new “employees.” The fish will be active in the early morning hours and will stay in special rest zones during the day.
